Are Root Canals Painful?
March 23, 2022 9:38 pmThere are a number of persistent rumors that swirl around root canals, and one of the most common is that root canals are a painful procedure. In today’s blog, we’re here to dispel that rumor, and make sure that all of our patients are comfortable getting this incredibly beneficial and routine procedure.
What Is a Root Canal?
Root canals are something that we dentists perform regularly. The procedure is one that addresses deep decay or damage within the tooth. By performing a root canal, we are able to avoid having to extract and replace the tooth, thus saving the natural tooth. So how does it work? We make a small hole in the affected tooth. We then can access the interior or the tooth through that hole and remove the affected tooth. Then we simply clean and seal the area and cover the tooth with a crown.
Are Root Canals Painful?
While the procedure we just described might not sound fun, we’re here to tell you that you don’t have to worry about experiencing pain. In fact, you aren’t going to notice the difference between this procedure and, say, getting a cavity filled. In fact, this procedure is going to help you avoid the pain that would come from an infected or damaged tooth that was left untreated. During the procedure, you’ll be completely numb in the area where we’re working, so you really won’t feel a thing.
Sedation Dentistry
For our patients who are especially nervous about root canals and other procedures, we do offer sedation dentistry here at our office. There are three types of sedation available, and you can read more about these options on our website.
