Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?
May 5, 2021 4:25 pmLosing one or all of your permanent teeth can not only damage your self-esteem, but also make it harder for you to chew or talk properly. One of the most versatile and effective restorative options are dental implants, which look and function just like natural teeth.
Before you consider dental implants, it’s important to understand if you’re a good candidate for the procedure. In this blog post, we’ll help you decide if you’re a candidate for dental implants, and walk through the dental implant procedure at Chandler Dental Center.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are composed of titanium rods that act as replacement tooth roots and are topped with a crown, bridge, or dentures depending on how many teeth you’re getting replaced.
The implant procedure typically takes place over the course of a few months. During your first appointment, your dentist will insert titanium rods into your gums to give them time to fuse to your jawbone for stability and strength. During subsequent appointments, your dentist will affix your replacement tooth and teeth to the titanium rods to complete your implant.
Our San Antonio office offers the entire implant procedure, from placement to restoration, so you don’t have to go to another dental office just to complete your treatment.
Implants are one of the most long-lasting restorative options, and can last up to a lifetime if cared for properly. Taking care of implants is similar to taking care of natural teeth — you must brush and floss them twice a day to keep them clean and healthy, and visit your dentist twice a year for routine checkups.
How Do I Know If I am a Good Fit for Dental Implants?
Dental implants require healthy gum tissue and jawbone strength in order to support implants. However, not everyone who can benefit from dental implants have strong gum tissue and jawbone strength.
In cases like these, we may have to perform a sinus lift to increase the bone in the upper jaw, or perform bone grafting which involves us taking bone from one area and transplanting it to the jawbone to build strength. Both of these procedures help patients build sufficient jawbone to receive dental implants.
We also offer mini dental implants, which are great for those who do not have enough bone to support traditional implants.
