How to Prevent Enamel Loss
August 12, 2021 5:07 pmTooth enamel is the hardest substance in the body, but that doesn’t mean it’s indestructible. Unfortunately, if you lose enamel there’s no way for it to grow back or for you to fully “rebuild it” so to speak. That’s why it’s so important for you to protect the enamel that you have. By protecting your enamel, you’re protecting your precious teeth from decay, acid, and plaque. Here are some tips on how to prevent enamel loss:
Use Fluoride Toothpaste
When choosing toothpastes, opt for one with fluoride in it. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that’s known to strengthen enamel with its remineralization properties. If you’re not getting enough fluoride from your toothpaste, you can also speak to your dentist about getting fluoride treatment.
Get a Mouthguard If Necessary
If you grind your teeth at night or if you play contact sports where it’s possible to receive a dental injury, then it’s in your best interest to get a custom mouth guard made. By wearing this mouth guard either when you sleep or while you’re playing sports, you can protect your enamel from getting worn down or damaged.
Watch What You Eat & Drink
Sugary and acidic foods and beverages are no friend to your enamel. While we’re not saying you need to give up everything sweet for the rest of your life, you should be mindful of what you’re consuming and what it means for your health. Swapping out coffee, soda, or juice for more water can help save your enamel from some erosion. You can also rinse your mouth with water after consuming any of these to prevent the cavity-causing bacteria from settling and eating away at your enamel.
